Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about compliance and our services.
What is a UK Responsible Person?
A UK Responsible Person (RP) is a business or individual established in the UK who takes legal responsibility for ensuring a product meets UK product safety and compliance requirements. They maintain the technical documentation, act as the point of contact for market surveillance authorities, and make sure products are correctly labelled before being placed on the UK market. Conformity Services can act as your dedicated Responsible Person so you can sell legally without setting up your own UK presence.
What is an Authorised Representative, and do I need one?
If your business is based outside the UK or EU, you may be legally required to appoint an Authorised Representative established in the market where you sell. They represent you on regulatory matters and liaise with the authorities. This often applies to overseas sellers and online marketplace sellers. We act as your Authorised Representative for both the UK and EU.
Do I need a Responsible Person to sell on Amazon, eBay or Etsy?
Increasingly, yes. Online marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay and Etsy require proof of compliance for regulated goods — including the appointment of a Responsible Person or Authorised Representative for products like cosmetics, electricals and food supplements. Without it, listings can be blocked or removed. We can take on that role and provide the documentation marketplaces ask for.
What is the difference between CE marking and UKCA marking?
CE marking demonstrates conformity with EU regulations, while UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is the equivalent for goods placed on the market in Great Britain. Depending on where you sell, you may need one or both. We help you determine the correct route, compile the technical file, and ensure your products are marked correctly.
What services does Conformity Services provide?
We act as your outsourced compliance department, covering external compliance support, technical documentation and product certification, label and packaging compliance reviews, third-party Responsible Person (RP) representation, market access and authorisation support, and Authorised Representative services for the UK and EU.
Which industries do you work with?
We support a wide range of sectors, including food & beverage, food supplements, cosmetics & personal care, medical devices, consumer products, electronics & electrical products, importers & distributors, manufacturers, e-commerce brands, halal businesses, and restaurants & hospitality.
What is technical documentation and why does it matter?
Technical documentation (often called a technical file) is the evidence that a product meets its applicable regulations — covering things like risk assessments, test reports, labelling and declarations of conformity. It must be kept current and available if an authority or marketplace requests it. We compile and maintain this documentation so you are always audit-ready.
Do you help with both UK and EU markets?
Yes. We provide Responsible Person and Authorised Representative services and regulatory support across both the UK and EU, helping you place products legally in either or both markets and reducing the delays that come with market entry.
